A Bangladeshi national named Azizul Islam was arrested near the Bagdogra Army Camp in Siliguri early Wednesday morning. Army personnel spotted him around 5 a.m. near the AMES crossing in Bagdogra in suspicious circumstances and took him into custody. Following initial questioning, the army police and intelligence officers handed him over to the Bagdogra Police Station under the Siliguri Police Commissionerate. Azizul was produced in Siliguri Court the same day.
According to police sources, Azizul Islam is a resident of Damalpur in Dinajpur, Bangladesh. He reportedly spent the night of May 25 in an open area near Shalbari close to Sukna. On May 26, he entered the forest area adjoining the Bengdubi Army Camp. Police officials said Azizul did not provide a satisfactory explanation for moving from Shalbari to the Bengdubi camp area. His statements contained contradictions, leading to further questioning.
This arrest marks the second instance in 19 days of a Bangladeshi national being detained near the Siliguri Army Camp. Earlier in the same month, another Bangladeshi was apprehended in the vicinity of the Bagdogra Army Camp by the army police. The presence of multiple such cases has led to increased security vigilance around the army camps in the region.
The police are currently holding Azizul on remand after his court appearance to conduct further investigations. The authorities are examining the circumstances of his entry into Indian territory and any possible links to cross-border activities. The investigation is ongoing.
